How To Cry On Command

design.jpg

If I had a nickle for every time a student asked me how to cry on command, I would be a rich man. Asking about how to cry on command is like asking how to take off and land a plane on your first day of pilot school.

There's a foundation that needs to be laid down with certain techniques before "crying on command" is an option. Here's the thing...when you learn how to do it the right way, you'll realize that how to cry on command is barely the question at all. The question is how do I act truthfully in the given imaginary circumstances? If crying is the right emotion, you need to feel it, not fake it. We talk about this extensively in Meisner training.

Crying on command is possible but it's not what you want to focus on, it's about how you get there. Watch the video below to see what I said when someone asked me how to cry on command.

Meisner Technique Training Course

Stephanie Jones (Artistic Director Emeritus, The Essential Collective Theatre) returns to Toronto, Canada after teaching her first year program at the prestigious The Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theatre in Manhattan.   Having studied originally with renowned Canadian Meisner instructor, Jacqueline McClintock, Ms. Jones utilized the technique in her own work as an actor for two decades prior to her becoming the latest Meisner Instructor of the 1rst year full-time program.  Ms. Jones is the both the first female and the first Canadian to hold this position.

The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre has been a major force in American theatre and theatre education since it’s founding in 1915, and the home of The Meisner Technique. Sanford Meinser developed and refined this a step-by-step procedure of self-investigation for the actor, to live truthfully under given imaginary circumstances.  This technique is now widely recognized as one of the foremost acting techniques taught today. There have been several versions of the technique in the modern-day classrooms, but Ms. Jones teaches according to The Playhouse guidelines, following the original intentions of Sanford Meisner.

Ms. Jones will offer a six-week course to 16 Toronto actors meeting bi-weekly and commencing Saturday June 6, 2015 at Fraser Studios.

What Is The Meisner Technique?

Jason Fraser, founder of Fraser Studios, sits down to discuss what is the Meisner Technique, an acting method pioneered by Sanford Meisner. If you struggle to be perceived as "authentic" in your acting, the Meisner Technique can help you get out of your own head and start acting instinctively, rather than always appearing scripted.

For many actors, mastering the Meisner Technique has become the most invaluable tool they have in their arsenal to deliver a convincing performance every time.

Sanford Meisner was a legendary acting teacher who developed an approach to acting that's now known as the Meisner Technique. Not to be confused with Method Acting, Meisner aimed to go in a different direction, forgoing any focus on the use of "affective memory" - a hallmark of Method Acting. Instead, the Meisner Technique emphasizes living truthfully in the given imaginary circumstances - a practice that removes the actor's focus from themselves and on to what's actually happening in the scene.

This was a groundbreaking approach at the time and inspired a league of the world's greatest actors to do their best work and, in turn, some of the finest work the world has seen on a stage or screen. Some notable students of the Meisner Technique include:

  • Tom Cruise
  • James Franco
  • Steve McQueen
  • Grace Kelly
  • Diane Keaton
  • Robert Duvall
  • Jeff Goldblum
  • Alec Baldwin
  • James Caan
  • and many more
